Summer Lecture Series with Benjamin Freyinger and Karin Liljegren

July 8, 2021, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Join us for a discussion with Benjamin Freyinger and Karin Liljegren on Thursday, July 8 at 1 PM PT.

Claus Benjamin Freyinger is co-Principal and co-founder of The LADG along with Andrew Holder in 2004. The founders see their work as contributing to a longer history of ideas and draw on this history to craft unexpected solutions to conventional problems in architecture and design. The firm works at all scales, with completed projects in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, and the United Kingdom. Recent work includes a multifaceted art studio and residential compound for a pair of professional visual artists, a free-standing indoor-outdoor restaurant in Venice California and the installation of a contemporary picturesque garden in Loeb Library at the Harvard Graduate School of design. The firm has received numerous professional honors and recognitions, including a Progressive Architecture Award Honorable Mention in 2017 and in 2018, the 2014 League Prize from the Architectural League of New York, and multiple citations from the Los Angeles Chapter of the AIA.

Karin Liljegren is the founder of Omgivning. She grew up in New Jersey, got her Bachelor's in architecture from UNC Charlotte, then came west in 1991 for her Master's in architecture from UCLA. She first settled on the west side and has since then lived in thirteen (!) locations in LA, moving from west to east. She's designed five of the places she's lived in and is just getting started. In an alternate life, she'd be doing pretty much what she's doing now.

Freyinger and Lijegren are both alumni of our M.Arch. Professional Program!

Our Summer Lecture Series invites speakers whose creative, professional, or scholarly practice serves as an inspiring model for participants of UCLA AUD's Teen ArchStudio and JumpStart Summer Programs. In these discussions, we'll learn what motivates their work, what research or design methods they use, and how their practice relates to the work of others and to your cultural perspective or values.
